HK TYCOON NAMES BLUE DIAMOND "STAR OF JOSEPHINE"

A Hong Kong property tycoon and collector who bought a flawless blue diamond for a record $9.5 million, has named it the "Star of Josephine," auction house Sotheby's said on Wednesday. Joseph Lau Luen-Hung made the winning bid last week by telephone for the diamond, which fetched the highest price per carat for any gemstone at the auction and a world record price for a fancy vivid blue diamond at auction. "Mr. Lau has already exercised his right to name the diamond, which is now known as 'Star of Josephine'," it said. The rectangular-shaped blue stone weighs 7.03 carats, about the size of a small coin, and was the rarest to enter the international market this year. Lau is chairman of Chinese Estates, a major Hong Kong property developer.

2009-05-13: CULLINAN BLUE DIAMOND BREAKS WORLD RECORDS AT AUCTION

The blue diamond produced from the Cullinan mine has sold for US$9,488,754m*, or US$1,349,752 per carat, establishing a new record price per carat for any gemstone sold at auction and the highest price for a fancy vivid blue diamond sold at auction. The important fancy vivid blue, internally flawless, cushion-shaped diamond weighing 7.03 carats sold yesterday evening as the centrepiece of Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels auction in Geneva. This sale price has surpassed the world record price per carat achieved for any gemstone at auction, which was formerly held by a 3.73 carat, fancy vivid blue pear-shaped diamond which sold for US$1,328,444 per carat at a Sotheby's auction in May 2008. It also surpasses the world record for a fancy vivid blue diamond sold at auction, which was formerly held by a 6.04 carat, fancy vivid blue diamond ring which sold for US$7,981,835 at a Sotheby's auction in October 2007. It was cut from a 26.58 carat rough discovered in 2008 at Petra Diamonds historic Cullinan diamond mine in South Africa, the world's most consistently reliable source of blue diamonds. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has graded the stone as fancy vivid blue in colour and internally flawless in clarity, the highest possible grading for a blue diamond.

Kazanjian Red Diamond Returns to the LA Natural History Museum

The Kazanjian Red diamond will be on display at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County through May 29, 2009. The rare diamond was found in South Africa, probably in 1927. During World War II, it was stolen in Arnhem during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, and hidden in a salt mine with other looted treasures. When it was recovered it was initially mistaken for a ruby. The diamond has passed through several owners, including Sir Ernest Oppenheimer, but was finally purchased by Los Angeles-based Kazanjian Bros. in 2007. This is the first exhibition of the diamond in the U.S. A sneak peak at the stone was offered at the museum this past October, before the diamond was sent to the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) for examination. The diamond can be viewed seven days a week at the museum, located at 900 Exposition Boulevard, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oscar nominees and attendees chose diamonds to accessorize their glamorous looks for Hollywood's biggest night. Throwback glamour was the mood of the evening as evidenced by the classic and alluring looks of iconic Hollywood beauties. Academy Award winner Kate Winslet channeled Grace Kelly in her 28 carat pear shaped diamond cluster earrings, 117 carat multi-cut diamond bracelet and diamond ring by Chopard. Audrey Hepburn's spirit was present in both Anne Hathaway wearing a diamond starburst brooch in hair, diamond watch bracelet, diamond swirl earrings, and diamond rings by Cartier and in Academy Award winner Penelope Cruz who wore the ultimate diamond classics - diamond riviere necklace, stacked diamond line bracelets and diamond studs from Chopard. Henson's 19th Century diamond statement necklace and 6 carat cushion cut diamond drop earrings from Fred Leighton framed her face beautifully. The diamond mixed cut micro-set drop earrings and diamond 3 stone ring from William Goldberg worn by Queen Latifah were the perfect complement to her look. And Amanda Seyfried's Fred Leighton diamond flower necklace, 19th Century diamond bracelet, old mine cut diamond earrings, and 19th Century diamond ring were the perfect ornamentation to her red dress and Veronica Lake waves.

The Wittelbach diamond next to a first class stamp

Becky Markley holds the Wittelbach diamond a rare 35.56 carat blue diamond, next to a British first class stamp, at Christie's auction house in London, Friday, Dec. 5, 2008. The rare blue diamond which was handed down through generations of German royalty has sold for a record-breaking 16.4 million pounds ($24.3 million) at auction Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, Christie's said. The Wittelsbach Diamond, a 35.56 carat cushion-shaped gem, has often had its color and clarity compared to the famed Hope Diamond, now on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. The rare gem was snapped up by billionaire diamond-dealer Laurence Graff for about 16.4 million pounds ($24.3 million), including buyer's premium, Christie's spokeswoman Alexandra Kindermann said.

The Wittelsbach Diamond

The Wittelsbach Diamond broke previous auction record. The $24.26 million Graff Diamonds paid for it represents a world record price for any diamond or jewel sold at auction, according to Christie’s. The diamond is a cushion-shaped deep grayish blue VS2 diamond dating to the 17th Century. It was part of the dowry of Infanta Margarita Teresa, the daughter of King Philip IV of Spain and wife of Leopold I of Austria, who later became the Holy Roman Emperor.

ROBBERS GRAB $108 MILLION OF HARRY WINSTON DIAMONDS

Armed robbers stole diamonds valued at 85 million euros ($108 million) from the Paris branch of jeweller Harry Winston. Four armed men entered the store on Avenue Montaigne near the Champs-Elysees shortly before its 5:30 p.m. closing time yesterday. They took almost all the jewels on display and forced the staff to give them diamonds from storage. No shots were fired. The branch was closed today, with a sole security guard outside saying he knew nothing about what happened yesterday. Three of the window displays were empty, while a diamond pendant and two jewel-encrusted watches were in the other two.

The Hope diamond was French

One of the most famous diamonds in the world, the 45.54-carat blue diamond known as the Hope Diamond and kept in the Smithsonian Institution, almost certainly has its origins in the lost Blue Diamond that was part of the pre-revolutionary French crown jewels, according to a team of French scientists. The team, led by mineralogist Francois Farges, examined a lead model of the Blue Diamond created by Paris jeweler Charles Achard and found that computer-generated proportions for the Hope Diamond could fit precisely inside the Blue Diamond model. One of Achard’s clients was a London resident listed as Mr. Hoppe, which sounds suspiciously like the banker Henry Philip Hope whom the Hope Diamond is named after. The Blue Diamond was cut from a 115.6-carat rough mined in Golconda, India, producing a 69-carat polished gem for King Louis XIV of France. It was stolen in 1792, in the aftermath of the French Revolution, and never seen again. The Hope Diamond appeared 20 years later in London.

The Hope diamond was French

French gem experts believe the Hope Diamond, a star exhibit in Washington's Smithsonian Institution, is a legendary gem once owned by King Louis XIV that was looted in the French Revolution. New evidence unearthed in France's National Museum of Natural History shows beyond reasonable doubt that the Hope Diamond is the same steely-blue stone once sported by the Sun King, they said. Mineralogist Francois Farges, heading an investigation published in a peer-reviewed French journal, said he was 99 percent sure the Hope and the Blue Diamond of the Crown were one and the same.

The 35.56-carat blue Wittelsbach diamond, slated for auction at Christie's

The Wittelsbach diamond, a 35.56-carat fancy deep grayish-blue diamond with a long history, is among the gems slated for auction at Christie's "Jewels: The London Sale" next month. Officially known as "Der Blaue Wittelsbacher," the diamond is one of the few that can claim 17th-century heritage. In 1664, King Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665) selected the diamond as part of the dowry of his daughter, Infanta Margarita Teresa (1651-1673), upon her engagement to Leopold I of Austria (1640-1705), who later became Holy Roman Emperor. The diamond subsequently became part of the Austrian and then the Bavarian crown jewels. The diamond has been part of a private collection since 1964, and its appearance at the upcoming Christie's auction marks its first offering to the international market in nearly 80 years. "It is a great honor and a lifetime dream to handle a museum-quality stone such as the Wittelsbach," said Francois Curiel, chairman of Christie's Europe and international head of jewelry. "The appearance of a large blue diamond, among the rarest of colors, with a history that can be traced back to the 17th century and 300 years of royal connections will surely be a thrilling occasion for all collectors of exceedingly rare jewels and works of art."

Earlier editions were even more expensive, with the 2003 model priced at £11 million (approximately $20 million then), a 2001 bra that was worth $12.5 million and a bra worn by supermodel Tyra Banks in 2004 that was valued at $10 million.

Christie's hits record in Hong Kong

Hong Kong—Christie's Hong Kong auction reeled in a record $60.1 million and was the largest jewelry sale ever organized by Christie's worldwide, the auction house said. The top lot of the day was a 101.27-carat, F, VVS1 diamond which was the largest diamond ever sold at auction in Asia. A private collector snapped it up for $6.2 million. Other records included the following: — A 16.04-carat, D, VVS2 circular-cut diamond that sold to an Asian private collector for $3,341,809 and set a world record price-per-carat record for a colorless diamond. — A square-shaped fancy green diamond of 10.36 carats that fetched $3,485,281 and set a world record price for a green diamond sold at auction. — Finally, a pair of Romanov emeralds which sold to an Asian private collector for $2,409,241 set a price-per-carat record for emeralds sold at auction.

BLUE DIAMOND GOES FOR $8.8 MILLION AT GENEVA SALE

A large blue diamond sold for 9.23 million Swiss francs ($8.78 million) at a jewellery auction marked by strong prices for both coloured and white diamonds, Christie's said. The rectangular blue stone weighing 13.39 carats, set in a ring surrounded by tiny pink diamonds, was the top lot at its semi-annual jewellery sale in Geneva on Wednesday night. Experts at Christie's and rival Sotheby's say collectors and traders remain hungry for unique items, especially coloured diamonds or historic gems, following world-record prices set for rare polished diamonds last year. The blue diamond, which Christie's said was the largest blue diamond graded "fancy intense" in colour ever to be put on the block, had been estimated at $6 to $8 million. Its buyer, a private collector, chose to remain anonymous. "It is truly exceptional to find a blue diamond of this intensity weighing more than 10 carats," Valdieu told reporters at a pre-sale briefing. A flawless heart-shaped vivid yellow diamond weighing 21.4 carats, set on a diamond neck-chain, fetched nearly 3.3 million Swiss francs ($3.14 million), in line with its estimate. The priciest lots at Sotheby's separate "Magnificent Jewels" sale are a pink diamond ring and a blue diamond ring, each estimated at over 2 million Swiss francs.

Who is selling it? 1.5 for the stone or per carat?

Posted by: Diamondluva - May, 27 2008

I have personally seen it. It is beautiful. It was analyzed by Stephen Hofer as the most saturated red he ever analyzed (more than the Hancock Red(he took the picture. It is for sale for $1,500,000.00.

Posted by: steve - May, 27 2008

if this stone is the most saturated red in the world, and red is the rarest color.....then is this the rarest diamond in the world? is it available? if so how much? what is a fair price for such a stone? i love this picture!

Posted by: cheryl - May, 22 2008

The owner of the stone, Robert Bogel (hence the name Rob Red), is selling it for $1.5 million for the stone.

Posted by: steve - May, 28 2008

That would be a new world record per carat if sold for that price. And considering the size of the stone it's almost crazy. On the other hand one could argue that given the absolute rarity of the stone all others are overpriced and this one is cheap. :-)

THIEVES STEAL A DIAMOND NECKLACE AT A DUTCH ARTS FAIR

Thieves have stolen a diamond necklace worth an estimated US$1.8 million at an arts fair in the southern Dutch city of Maastricht, police said Friday. Two women from Mexico and a man from Costa Rica suspected of involvement have been arrested, police spokeswoman Renske Hamming said, but the necklace has not been recovered. Police said the theft was on Thursday afternoon. The vendor selling the necklace noticed it was missing shortly after having a conversation with the two women, but when she ran after them, the man from Costa Rica "who was apparently together with the women blocked her," a police statement said. All three were arrested before leaving the grounds of the TEFAF fair, but the necklace had vanished.

15 million £ stolen in Milan

Tuesday, 26 February 2008 Thieves dug an underground tunnel into a top Milan showroom and stole £15m of diamond-studded jewellery while the owners were in Los Angeles hosting an Oscars party. Seven men dressed as police broke into the Damiani showroom on Sunday morning without letting off alarms or being captured on CCTV, and took little more than 40 minutes to execute their plan after tying up staff. They had spent a month digging from a disused cellar in a building next door. Millions of euros worth of jewels were stolen, but some of the most valuable pieces were being used by Hollywood stars during the Academy Awards ceremony. The British Oscar winner Tilda Swinton had been provided a diamond-studded bracelet by the jeweller. Milan police said: "The gang all wore dark sunglasses and spoke with southern Italian accents."

The Rojtman Diamond

Graff bought the stone at a Sothebys auction last fall for $1.92 million (its estimate had been $1.5 to $2 million, as I recall). I came across this photo a few days ago, its the first time I'd seen it set in jewelry. It weighs 107.46 carats and is Fancy Yellow. There are 8.71 carats of pink and brown(?) diamonds around it, and its set in rose gold. History: The early history of the diamond such as the country of origin, mine of origin, date of discovery, original owners of the diamond, the person or company involved in the cutting etc. are all unknown. But some experts believe that the diamonds origin is from the alluvial deposits of the South African diamond fields, in the early days of diamond mining in South Africa. The 123-carat Stewart diamond also originated in a similar manner. The first time the diamond made its public appearance was in 1957, when Harry Winston, the internationally famous jeweler and diamond dealer, based in New York City, acquired the diamond, which was a yellow cushion-cut weighing 107.60 carats. Harry Winston recut it slightly to its present weight of 107.46 carats, and mounted it in an elaborate clip-pendant combination. In 1963 he sold the diamond to Marc B. Rojtman and his wife Lilian of the United States, who were keen collectors of jewels. But, they were more renowned as collectors and connoisseurs of Old Master paintings and other art works. They extended their patronage to the study and development of arts, and set up a family foundation that advances education in the arts. When the Rojtman Diamond was in their possession, they lent it for an exhibition at the De Beers Diamond Pavilion in Johannesburg in 1966. On April 25th 2006, the Rojtman diamond featured at a Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels Auction, held at Manhattan, New York. The sale of the 107.46-carat, elegant, cushion-shaped, Fancy Yellow color diamond, was expected to be the highlight of the auction. The spectacular diamond had an estimate of $1.5 - 2.0 million placed on it. The sale also featured another historically important diamond the, 65.57-carat, Fancy Dark Orange Brown, Golden Maharajah Diamond with an estimated value of $400,000 to $600,000. Other items in the auction included a spectacular array of jewelry and colored gemstones by Cartier's, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Harry Winston. Sotheby's also held a public viewing of the items to go on sale from April 19 to 24, at York Avenue, in New York. There was an enthusiastic response to the auction, from buyers representing all regions of the world. The Rojtman diamond as expected achieved a record price of $1.92 million. However, the greatest surprise at the auction was the price achieved by the Golden Maharajah diamond, which fetched a record price of nearly $ 1.4 million, far in excess of the estimated value, after an intense bidding competition between eight of the buyers. The Rojtman and the Golden Maharajah diamonds were both acquired by Graff Diamonds Ltd. of London.

Legendary Jewelry in Diamond Divas Exhibition

An exhibition of famous diamond jewelry will be put on display at the Antwerp Diamond Museum. “Diamond Divas†will feature items worn by royals, high society and famous stars of the stage and the silver screen and will run from April 11 to June 8. The items on display were chosen for the legends surrounding them – some stories associated with the jewels centering on their owners, sometimes on the event for which they were created. Among the items presented will be bracelets from the “Art de Cartier†collection owned by Gloria Swanson, a star from Hollywood’s silent movie era who was famous for her extravagant lifestyle. The tiara owned by Doris Duke, the billionaire tobacco heiress who died under mysterious circumstances in 1993, will also be displayed, as well as the “snake†necklace owned by Maria Felix, a star of the Mexican screen, and the famous “Moon of Baroda†necklace, which has as its centerpiece a 24.04 carat canary yellow pear shaped diamond, and which was worn by Marilyn Monroe at the premiere of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.â€
